4499 Ruffin Road, San Diego, CA 92123

Ben Stone - Advocacy Committee Chairperson/Vice-President SDMBA

Meeting start time: 6:05 pm

  1. Welcome and Introductions (Susie Murphy)

  2. Questions or comments? Ken : Oak canyon sign that says no trespassing, and it gets to where there is Mr Toad’s Ride, is that sign being pushed North? Answer Ben Stone: military could move sign ever so slightly. Mostly not legal trails in this area. Kevin Loomis has been speaking with MCAS to discuss movement of signs. Getting a new base commander in June and SDMBA will meet with him early in his new tenure.

  3. SDMBA independence from IMBA Update (Kevin Loomis) How many people voted in here to leave IMBA? Most in the room raised hands. Last Day as a chapter will be 4/29/18. All membership money will now remain in San Diego.

  4. Mapping assistance with MTB project and TrailForks (Susie Murphy) Legal routes that are either not mapped or not correctly or completely. South bay takers? Anyone with a Garmin can help with mapping. Content needs to be complete. It would be so helpful to fill in the gaps. Any postings should have the official names of the trails of the agency or park they use.

  5. TrailCare funding Website (Susie) Based off of strava. Started in Santa Barbara after the fires. Give donations and use local and when traveling. Upload activity from strava it will match the jurisdictions that you ride in and will send email and ask if you want to donate. Upload trail segment, an amount per mile (.5, .10 cents). www.trail.care

  6. Non System Community Built Trails (Ben) Calaveras shut down has led to increased illegal trail building in other parts of North County. Sage Hill is closed now but the county is going to open it, but SDMBA will be meeting with the County to learn what trails will be opened.

  7. Mother Miguel/Rockhouse update (Jose Galaz) - it is an original switchback hiking trail, very popular now. Located in the South Bay. This project with US Fish and Wildlife will take more than one season to complete and will need volunteers that are familiar with rock work. Will be a new entrance because the old one is private property.

  8. Call for help Julian Apr 14 & Apr 21 (Ben Stone)

  9. Black Mountain Open Space Update (Matt Bartelt) Miner’s Ridge Trail that has been closed for 15 months will open again soon. Doing some work quickly to cap areas that have high levels of arsenic. 10-20 foot section. Black Widow Trail work will start next winter with some prep work to start in the fall.

  10. Cleveland National Forest: Mt. Laguna (Ben Stone) The Descanso District of USFS has approved some of the reroutes, connectors and new trails for a total of about 8 miles. There are still a lot of discussions to take place to finalized any of this plan.

  11. Cleveland National Forest: Orosco Ridge (Ben Stone) Palomar District. NEPA studies are currently being conducted and will continue through the summer. SDMBA is paying for the USFS staff time to complete this required part of the plan.

  12. eMTB update from jurisdictions/agencies (Susie) Class 1 and 2 Ebikes are allowed on City of San Diego non-motorized trails.  Most other agencies and jurisdictions at this time have said that e bikes are all considered motorized and are not allowed on non-motorized trails.

  13. SPECIAL GUEST: Matt Bavaro’s Eagle Scout Project: PQ Duck Pond trail restoration, he chose this to help out the mtn bikers of SD. Putting in pavers stones.  Cost is about $1200, and now more pavers are needed. Rotary Club is donating at least half, funding some with the troop and planning a GoFund Me page for it. Completed most of the path, rocks cleared away, flattening out path and rounding out turns, setting up berms. Ken Oertly: is this a multi-use trail Matt Bartelt:  yes, we flattened a few pavers to allow hikers and equestrians to enjoy as well. Kevin Loomis thanked Matt Bavaro for stepping up into this leadership role.
