Discussion Items:

  1. Welcome and Introductions (Susie Murphy)

  2. Questions or comments?

  3. Calaveras (Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve) Update (Ben Stone)

    • Mtn biking not allowed at CHER

    • Only legal trails are two fireroads on the east and west side (hikers only)

    • Adding mtn biking as an allowed use (3 ways) – legislative, request for change, request a change to title 14 through CDFW commission. Legislative takes time, request was sent and refused. Cumbersome process to change title 14. CEQA review & litigation would happen and stifle process.

    • Next Steps

      1. CDFW – business as usual which is to block public access

      2. WHCC – Looking for funding for warden

      3. City of Carlsbad – Not their issue. Helping with feeding routes into CHER. Trying to stay neutral. Might be possible for bike park in Carlsbad.

      4. SDMBA – Continue to try and change minds and keep community informed about possible enforcement.

    • Illegal trail built but was decommissioned to combat damage but there is more work to do. Don’t cut switchbacks, keep the singletrack single, ride it-don’t slide it.
