Advocacy Meeting

Vicki Krauss thanked all for attendance and support of the Lakeside horse/bike training event

  1. Guests:  John Mendez (for Senator Jones) john.mendez@sen.ca.gov

    AB 111 would have established new bill of recreation; goal was to promote job growth on outdoor recreation. Senator Jones supported the bill, but it’s in “suspense” file. This is the 3rd time. 

We asked if the Senator has any feedback on the CHER issue- John will get back to us.

11/14/19 6-8pm @ Sonrise Church - next open house for the Senator; many non-profit attendees 

  1. Forest Service Projects (Ben)

-Descanso Mt Laguna - project is moving forward; now officially called Mount Laguna Trails Restoration Project. District would like to see it off their agenda by next fiscal year.

-Palomar Orosco - Project has been cancelled with no notice to SDMBA by the District. Word was received on 8/1/2019. Now have a new forest supervisor: Scott Tangenberg

Meeting scheduled with Scott and other staff to find a way to resurrect the project. Duncan Hunter’s district is the only one we’ve heard back from so far. Thanks to all members who have written letters to election official on this issue.

  1. County Bike Parks North, South and East update (Ben)

-Bonita under Construction -should be open in the next 2 months

    SDMBA has paid for the park; no fee for riders. 

-Alpine possible

-Bonsall Possible - this is a funded project/looks promising

-Escondido Possible - upcoming meeting. Received Prop 68 funds.

-San Marcos in planning phase

-Carlsbad Possible - next meeting 9/21 see Facebook invite

-Chula Vista/OVRP  in planning phase- already been budgeted

 

  1. Black Mountain/Black Widow update (Matt Bartelt) 

    Not much work has been done due to dry weather

    4 wheel drive forklift been offered for us to use to haul remaining stones     up the trail.

    Trail has been modified by disgruntled people not happy with the new trail design. 

 

  1. PQ/Poway Connector at Creekside School (Matt Bartelt)

    

 

  1. eMTB Update local and national (Susie)

    E-bikes curently allowed on non-motorized trail - see link

We’re thinking about designating an e-bike liason

Tim Schroeder comments: SDMBA can act as a clearinghouse for the discussion; educating on Class 1 and Class 2 Mountain bikes; talk with E-bike dealers about education/clinics for e-bike purchasers.  

 

  1. Trail work winter 2020 and Winter Intern (Ben)

Intern will be for 18 weeks starting Jan. 2nd. Assist in larger scale trail days and winter work.

-North La Costa, Lake Calavera, Elfin Forest, Lake Hodges and Daley Ranch. 

-San Diego Black Mountain, Tecolote, Balboa Park, Mission Trails and Canyons

-South County, Chula Vista and Rockhouse

-East County Mt Laguna and Crestridge 

 

  1. CDFW issues/update at CHER (Ben)

  • Wardens have not been observed as often lately;

  • Ben asked for copies of their public records; nothing been produced yet

 

Ben hosting a North County meeting on Sept 19th @ Zoic in Carlsbad to engage north county people on La Costa and others.

 

Other business: Kevin spoke on the California Mountain Biking Coalition which has been started to have a statewide voice for mountain bikers to lobby in Sacramento; to have a unified state voice; knowledge garden; promotes Advocacy

Follow California Mountain Biking Coalition on FB.  SDMBA Executive Director Susie Murphy and Kevin Loomis are on the steering committee of CAMTB. SDMBA board is discussing how to support this effort.
